Most Indian interviews — HR round, manager round, and the telephonic screen before them — draw from the same pool of questions. Prepare these and you have covered 80% of any interview.

The opener

Tell me about yourself. Ninety seconds: who you are professionally, the one or two things you have done that matter for this job, and why you are here. Do not recite your resume or your family background.

Motivation

  • Why do you want to leave your current job? Growth, learning, a bigger scope — never a complaint about a boss.
  • Why this company? Name one thing you actually know about them: a product, a client, an expansion.
  • Where do you see yourself in five years? A role that plausibly follows this one, in this field.

Competence

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses? One strength with an example; one real weakness with what you are doing about it.
  • Describe a difficult situation and how you handled it. Use Situation → Action → Result, keep it under two minutes.
  • Explain your last project. Problem, your role, tools, outcome in numbers.

The logistics round

  • What is your current CTC and expected CTC? State current honestly; give a range for expected (research it on our salary guides).
  • What is your notice period? Be exact. If it is 60 or 90 days, mention whether buyout is possible.
  • Are you willing to relocate / work in shifts / travel? Answer plainly. A "yes" you cannot honour costs you the job later.
  • Do you have any questions for us? Always ask two: about the team, and about how success is measured in the first six months.

Questions freshers get

Why did you choose this course? What did you learn in your internship? Explain your final-year project. Are you comfortable with a bond or a fixed-term contract?

Questions experienced candidates get

Why the gap in your resume? Why so many job changes? Have you managed a team? What would your current manager say about you?
